In past years E and I have grown our own herbs and really enjoyed the bounty of fresh basil, oregano, chili peppers, and the like. This year, we ventured into the world of vegetables.

Now, if you know me at all, you know that I have a black thumb. I kill everything that doesn’t meow or cry for its food. I’m kidding. Sort of. Okay, I’m not good with plants. So, I was a bit skeptical of our ability to actually produce any crops. Well, it has been really fun growing vegetables with the kids. And, shockingly, I never knew how much better they taste right off the vine. It’s not just the lack of pesticides either. It must be the dirt.

Anyway, here are some pictures of our cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers. We are hoping to help our neighbors start a neighborhood garden in the next year!

These grape tomatoes are so good that...well, they don't make it into salads.

These grape tomatoes "accidently" didn't make it to dinner.

Our cucumbers have learned to crawl up our garage door.

Our Lake Michigan trip

Last week we spent the week at a house about 3 hours north of here on Lake Michigan. We went up with our friend and new house mate Elise, and our other friends from church, Alex and Matt came for a few days. We also spent two of the days with our good friends who used to live here in The Bend and now live in Muskegan, MI, Kristin and Simeon Frang! Aside from Greta getting home sick again, it was a wonderfully relaxing week in a beautiful setting. Erik got a bit of work done and had some time for play, and I got to finish my book I am reading.

This is a view from the house. To get to the beach, we had to climb up the stairs, over a dune, and through the woods. It was quite a workout but really neat to have our own private access to the beach. In fact, the whole community was a private, gated neighborhood. You had to drive through cornfields, then you found this little gate on a dirt road, went through the gate and drove a mile through the woods, then up over a dune, and here you were! A highlight for me was definitely watching the weather–gorgeous sunsets, magnificent stars, and really neat storms and fog!

A highlight for the kids was that since the house was on a dune, the area under the deck was a giant sandpit, which provided hours of entertainment! On one day Kristin and her son Ethan joined the kids and I running trucks through the sand.

The beach was a lot of fun, but a bit difficult with little kids. Lake Michigan can have a pretty strong undertow and riptide and so we couldn’t let Will get further than arm’s reach from us. And Greta was very worried about the waves. On calm days I would swim her out to the sandbar, where she would have lots of fun playing. On windy, wavy days, we played in the sand a lot, taking walks along the beach and making footprints in the wet sand. On one particular day, Kristin took us to a local secret–this awesome park where a small lake flows into Lake Michigan, creating a warm and shallow waterway, perfect for young kids!

Despite the cold air that day, they loved the chance to play in the water without me holding them. Of course, Greta kept her water wings on, and Will ran fearlessly into the deepest parts of the water, attempting to doggy paddle right away! I could see how kids learn to swim quickly if they play every day in water like this!

It is hard for me to believe that with all this beauty and fun, not to mention cartoons every morning and dessert every night that Greta still told me that our house was more fun than this one. I guess I should be glad she likes her home and her life here in South Bend!

This is long overdue but I’ve been meaning to post about our trip to New Hampshire. I have had much less time recently to keep up this blog because putting Greta to bed has become a many-hour adventure. And when I am done with it, I am too beat to do anything but clean up and sleep. But, I guess it’s time to write.

We spent 2 wonderful weeks in New Hampshire in July. Erik, the kids, and I were up there with my parents for one week. Then, Erik left for DC for some research and the kids and I stayed on another week, joined by my sisters and brother-in-law, and niece. It was a terrific time and I would love to be able to spend 2 weeks in New Hampshire every summer with the family! Some highlights were a family hike up Little SugarLoaf, where Greta hiked almost the whole thing by herself, swimming in my parents pool everyday, enjoying the outdoors, Will and Veronica running up and down the hill outside of the house, and taking the kids to camp for the mid-summer fair. Being away from Erik for two whole weeks was really hard. Greta, particularly, was quite homesick and missed him a ton. Here are some pictures from the trip, taken from Tracy and Leigh :)

Will’s half birthday

So, here we are. It is almost June 24th. Forever, it shall be a significant day in the Peterson household: Will’s half birthday. Now, I am not usually one for half birthdays. They are usually a sorry excuse to get more presents. However, since Will was born on Christmas Eve, we feel like we should make an exception. Christmas Eve is a really hard time to have a birthday, so we are starting the half birthday tradition this year. Since Barbara was in town this weekend, we had a small celebration when she was here. We had some pound cake and then some present opening. Pretty simple. Plus, we were able to leave the kids for the weekend with their grandma and new toys :) Here are some pictures…

It was actually difficult to get him to smile because he kept anticipating the flash and would squeeze his eyes close really tight, like so…

Greta was very into this half birthday thing and may try to persuade us to celebrate hers…hmmmm… at this rate of celebrating birthdays, we are glad we only have 2 kids!

Our weekend in Oklahoma was terrific. We forgot how fun a 13 hour car ride can be if you don’t have small children with you! However, we missed our kiddos a lot and were glad to come home!

We’re off to the dunes tomorrow to meet our good friends Brad and Lisa!

Digging in the dirt!

We’ve been doing a lot of gardening recently. And we have this patch of dirt we let the kids dig in. We even bought Greta and Will some gardening tools to use. This has become the favorite back yard activity. The only problem is that it can get a little messy. This time I stupidly let them play with the sprinkler BEFORE digging in the dirt–oops!

Did you eat something, Will?!

Nice bottom, Greta!

Greta is proudly sitting in the hole she just dug! Don’t you miss childhood?! :)
